Toshogu shrine enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu and has been witnessing the changing times of "Mori no-miyako" -the City of Trees- for 350 years. This old shrine with its tranquil surroundings and abundance of greenery represents the stylishness and the ultimate essence of Date culture.

Highlights

Toshogu shrine has Honden (the main shrine), Karamon (a Chinese-style gate), Sukashibei (an openwork fence), Zuisinmon (a guiardian gate), and Ishitorii (a stone gateway). They have all been designated as important cultural assets of Japan.
