This shrine was founded by Date Masamune in 1607 and was designated as a National treasure in 1952. The shrine embodies the Gonngen-zukuri (Ishinoma-zukuri) style and the main shrine, Ishino-ma, and front shrine are all built in a row. The style is Irimoya-zukuri and Kokera-buki, and the front shrine bears Chidori-hahu gables Ko-hai and fine Nokikara-hahu gables.
Kitayama Gozan
The 5 temples of Gozan are Toushou-ji Temple, Koumyou-ji Temple, Kakuhann-ji Temple, Shikuku-ji Temple, and Mansho-ji Temple. They were all built by Date Masamune on the heights of Kitayama and all belong to the Rinzai School sect.
Site of Sendai Castle
Sendai Castle(Aoba-jo) now known as the Site of Sendai Castle was built for the family of Date Masamune, the founder of Sendai. The castle is located approximately 130m above sea level and was built to hold a natural stronghold. It is said that Date Masamune dared not to build a castle tower to avert precaution from Tokugawa Ieyasu, the Shogun. Unfortunately, all that remains of the original site are the stone walls and the restored "Sumiyagura" corner castle turret.
Zuihoden
Surrounded by cedar trees, this is the ancestral tomb of Lord Date Masamune, founder of the Date Clan. It is also the final resting place of the second lord, Tadamune and the third lord, Tsunamune. The Memorial Museum exhibits various historical and cultural materials.
Jogi Nyorai Saiho-ji Temple
This temple has a Sadayoshido hall, a Shinhondo hall, and a Gojuno-tou (a five-storied pagoda). The Zelkova tree of the burial mound Tenno-zuka (Renri-no-keyaki) is a sacred tree which is believed to help with matchmaking. The temple also has a Tamatebako exhibition room and a Yasaguri tea-ceremony room. (300 a cup).
Sendai Daikannon (The great image of the God of Mercy)
This 100 meter high statue rises 12 stories and enshrines the deity on the top floor besides 108 images and 12 Guardian Gods. From the observation platform, you have a panoramic view of Sendai. Elevators are also available.
Toshogu Shrine
Toshogu shrine enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu and has been witnessing the changing times of "Mori no-miyako" -the City of Trees- for 350 years. This old shrine with its tranquil surroundings and abundance of greenery represents the stylishness and the ultimate essence of Date culture.
Rinno-ji Temple
This temple has a 5-storied stone pagoda, with a stock of 2,600 rolls of Hannya-shingyo (Buddhist scriptures), Chasitsu "Hanjakuan" (a tea ceremony room), and a 3-storied pagoda. The site is affluent with flowers from all seasons, and it also has a Japanese garden with lanes to wander around its pond and fountains.
