Sendai-shi Yagiyama Zoological Park and Gardens

Outline

The zoo is located on Yagiyama hill, to the south of the Site of Sendai Castle and just beyond Tatsunokuchi gorge(14.6 kilometers). It opened in 1965 to exhibit various kinds of animals and due to the abundance of greenery at the zoo, visitors are able to see animals in their natural surroundings. The African Zone and The Fierce Animal Zone were respectively opened in 1999 and 2002.

Highlights

In The African Zone, you can see African elephants, giraffes, and zebras walking just like they do on the savanna plain. In The Fierce Animal Zone, all that seperates you from these magnificent animals is the glass wall. From here, you can have face to face contact with polar bears, lions and tigers, all from different climate regions.
