The zoo is located on Yagiyama hill, to the south of the site of Sendai Castle and just beyond Tatsunokuchi gorge(14.6 kilometers). It opened in 1965 to exhibit various kinds of animals and due to the abundance of greenery at the zoo, visitors are able to see animals in their natural surroundings. The African Zone and The Fierce Animal Zone were respectively opened in 1999 and 2002.
Wild Plant Park
Wild plants and trees are seperately planted under several classified groups: high mountain, seaside, herbs, and hagi (Japanese bush clover). Various events such as the Spring Poem Festival (Haruno-Utano-tsudoi), Hagi festival, and Plant Appreciation Festival are planned for visitors to appreciate plants.
Akiu Resort Forest and Sports Park
This park is located in a large forest and has various sport facilities, camping sites, and automobile camping sites so that visitors can enjoy first hand contact with nature and at the same time the company of others.
Akiu Country Club
Akiu Country Club is located 5 minutes drive away from Akiu Hot Springs Area and has an 18-hole golf course. All 18 holes are seperated and the course is considered as hilly. This 18-hole short course can provide a challenge for any player who wants to better their game.
