Sakunami Hot-Springs

Outline

The Hot water comes from the bottom of the valley which forms both the Motoyu and Shinyu areas. It is said that this hot spring was found in 721 by Gyouki, a Buddhist monk, who was traveling to the Tohoku region. A legend tells that in 1189 the troops of Yoritomo once took a rest there. Motoyu spa resort was developed in 1796 by Iwamatsu Kisoji under the permission of the Date clan. Shinyu is also known as "Kami-no-yu" (hot spring of the God) and it is said that Shinyu was opened by Shusen, a Buddhist monk in 1854. This hot spring is famous for its open-air bath and attracts many visitors from all over the nation. The resort is blessed with ntural beauty where many seasonal activities can be done. Some of these activities are the gathering of edible wild vegetables especially in Spring, fishing in Summer, Imo-ni-kai (Taro-cooking party), the picking of mushrooms, and the vewing of Autumn leaves. Famous sightseeing spots are the chain of Funagata-yama mountains and Futakichi-keikoku gorge, and in the neighbouring areas are Jogi-nyorai Temple and Nikka Whiskey Brewery.
