Various sizes of 260 islands in peaceful Matsushima Bay are named Happyaku-yashima because of their abundance. The scenic beauty viewed from the sea is counted as one of the scenic trio of Japan.

Some 800 years back in the late era of Heian, Hiraizumi was equal to Hakata and Kyoto in scale. It is a place where the unique Buddhist culture flourished. Chusonji Temple is a treasure house of Heian works of art, including Konjikido (Golden Temple), designated as the first national treasure, and over 3,000 national treasures and important cultural assets. And furthermore, Mootuji Jodoteien Garden has been designated both as a special historic spot as well as a special scenic spot. In an effort to receive registration of World Heritage in 2008, Hiraizumi is actively promoting the preservation of the cultural assets and relevant projects.
