Matsushima Bay Cruising

Various sizes of 260 islands in peaceful Matsushima Bay are named Happyaku-yashima because of their abundance. The scenic beauty viewed from the sea is counted as one of the scenic trio of Japan.

Zuiganji Temple

The Temple founded by Jikaku Daishi (794-864; a high monk of Tendai School) 1,200 years ago is the highest ranking of Zen temples in Ooshu (Tohoku District) and served as the family temple of Date Masamune (1567-1636; a fuedal lord, the founder of Sendai City). The exisitng stuructures were made completly by Date Masamune in 1604 after construction of 5-10 years. Its Butsuma (the room where the family Buddhist altar is set) called Kujakunoma has Fusuma-e (paintings on Fusuma, or paper sliding doors) and wood-carvings on Chinese doors, all of which are so gorgeous and show the state-of-arts of Momoyama Bunka Cluture. The Temple has Mushabashiri (an escape under the floor), which shows that it was built based on samurai (warrior) residences of the time.

Godaido Temple

Originated from the Bishamondo Temple built by Sakanoue Tamuramaro (758-811; a Shogun General who conquered the Tohoku Region). The existing 1-story onion-shaped hall, bare-wooden structures were completed by Date Masamune with the exquisite technique of Momoyama-style buildings. It is also significant as the first building that Masamune built, and was completed in 1604.

Shiroishi-jo Castle

In 1602, Shiroishi-jo Castle was given by Date Masamune, a fuedal lord of Tohoku, to his chief vassal Katakura Kojuro Kagetugu. After that, the castle witnessed its prosperity as the residence of the Katakura family. In 1875 after the Meiji Restoration, the castle was closed off to the public and demolished, but was rebuilt in 1995 thanks to the devoted effort of Shiroishi citizens.

Miyagizao Kokeshi-kan (Kokeshi Doll House)

Traditional kokeshi dolls - 5,000 wooden toys from all over the nation are exhibited and are classified according to schools and craftsmen. Performance facilities such as a demonstration corner and a doll painting room are available and customers can also enjoy shopping.

Okama (Tarn)

The name Okama comes from a rice-cooker as it is a round-shaped crater lake. Filled with emerald-green water in contrast to the rough crater walls, it is shrouded in mystical atmosphere and is also called "Goshiki-numa" , as the water is constantly changing its color reflecting the sunlight. This, together with Juhyo in winter time, is a symbol of Zao.

Yamadera (Risshakuji Temple)

An old temple of Tendai School built by Jikaku Daishi in 860. The main gate leads to over 1,000 stone steps up to the top. On the way up among groves of Japanese cedar, there are scattered rock stupas with engraved names of Buddha on the rocks and Semi-zuka (barrow) where strips of Basho's own handwriting are buried.

Sendai-jo Castle Remains

This is the remains of Sendai-jo (Aoba-jo) Castle built by Date Masamune in 1603. His mounted statue and Gokoku-jinnja are there. From Aoba-jo, you can also receive a great view of the beautiful Hirose River and the whole downtown of Sendai.

Shopping

The center of the city is filled with vigor and the shopping outlets are safe and clean. It is a place attracting people not only from Miyagi-ken but also from Yamagata-shi and Fukushima-shi. Six shopping malls lie along the front and west end of Sendai Station, with a total length of 1.5 km. In addition, the roadside Zelkova trees of Jozenji-dori and the dry riverbed of the Hirose-gawa river are favourite places for the citizens to rest.

Chusonji Temple

It was opened in 850 by Jikaku Daishi as the head temple of the Tendai school. In particular, Konjiki-do Temple built in 1124 is based on Amida-do style of the late Heian era and all parts, inside and outside, are lacquered with gold leaf, thus showing the luxury of the Hiraizumi Golden culture.
