Visitors to Sendai and the Tohoku Region during summer will find captivating festivals, rich greenery, and tantalizing fruits ripe for the picking. A highly recommended summer tourism destination, there is plenty to be enjoyed.
The Sendai Tanabata Festival is the highlight of summer. The festival features tall bamboo poles decorated with traditional tanabata decorations made from "Washi" (Japanese paper). The sight of the long paper streamers blowing in the wind on a clear summer’s day is spectacular. More than 1500 bamboo poles, elaborately decorated with festive streamers and ornaments, form a rainbow colored arch over Sendai’s shopping arcades.
