Ogatsu stone is a precious stone from Miyagi, quarried from rock layers about 300 million years old.
Found only in Ogatsu, Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, it is known as the material for inkstones presented to Date Masamune, the samurai lord who founded Sendai. As "Ogatsu Suzuri (Ogatsu inkstone)," it is designated a national Traditional Craft of Japan. It was also used for the roof of Tokyo Station's Marunouchi Building, restored in 2012.

Kokeshino SHIMANUKI CO.,LTD

Our historical shop inside the Sendai shopping arcades sells kokeshi dolls and various crafts from Miyagi and Tohoku. Some Sendai crafts and special items sold in our shop are not sold at any other store. Besides shopping, visitors can enjoy hands-on experiences such as kokeshi doll painting or making an LED candle.

Our shop is filled with kokeshi (traditional wooden dolls), along with crafts and goods from all over the Tohoku region. With crafts available only at Kokeshi no Shimanuki, it's fun just to browse — and a perfect place to find souvenirs.
