Have fun working with your hands and experience the joy of traditional Japanese crafts!

Cut the length of the chopsticks and smooth the chopsticks with sandpaper. Color your chopsticks with persimmon juice and apply the lacquer. You have 3 color choices to finish the chopsticks: black, vermilion, or natural (original color of lacquer). Even beginners can easily enjoy this experience as professional craftsmen carefully explain the process.

By making your own lacquered chopsticks, we hope you are able to experience the joy of handicrafts and at the same time understand the “importance of something authentic.” We also hope that this experience will give you a glimpse into the characteristics of traditional Japanese crafts with a long history and expand your mind to include a new perspective.

Sendai Tansu Kumanodou Workshop

At Sendai Tansu Kumanodou we offer a “Lacquering Chopsticks Experience” where visitors can easily experience creating their own functional work of art. Additionally, we have created the “Kumanodou Lacquer Classroom” for those who want to learn how to make lacquerware as a hobby. Cut the length of the chopsticks and smooth the chopsticks with sandpaper. Color your chopsticks with persimmon juice and apply the lacquer. You have 3 color choices to finish the chopsticks: black, vermilion, or natural (original color of lacquer). Even beginners can easily enjoy this experience as professional craftsmen carefully explain the process. We have opened “Kumanodou Lacquer Classroom” inside the “Lacquer Art Creation Studio” (Kagitori, Taihaku Ward, Sendai City). There we teach how to master the basics of lacquering, and how to apply lacquerware decorations such as gold or silver painting, inlaying gold, and inlaying mother-of-pearl.

Items not included in the fee	Shipping fee (If you are unable to pick-up the following day, please pay for shipping).
Fee Remarks	In order for the lacquer to dry, you are unable to bring home your chopsticks the same day.
