Try sutra (“shakyo”) and Buddhist image (“shabutsu”) tracing. Experience peace of mind while becoming familiar with temples and Buddhism!

This experience program takes place inside Rinnoji Temple, a historic temple in Sendai City.

First of all, chant the “Heart Sutra” (“Hannya Shingyo”) in front of the principal object of worship. Then move to an area to do “shakyo” sutra copying. Using brush and ink, copy the Heart Sutra. You may not have enough time to finish writing, but is more important to remain quiet and calm then to finish writing. You also have the option to trace images of Buddha.

Rinnoji Temple settled in its current location in 1602, which was immediately after Lord Masamune founded the city of Sendai in 1600. When you visit our temple, you can learn about the history of the Date clan and view temple gardens that have been restored after being destroyed by a fire. Rinnoji Temple also aids recovery efforts since the Great East Japan Earthquake through its forest-making program.
