Lu Xun studied for one and a half years at Sendai Medical College, which was the predecessor of Tohoku University. In Sendai, Lu Xun decided to focus his life's energy on "literature." In this tour, we will walk around the Tohoku University Katahira Campus where the Sendai College of Medicine was located. We will learn about the challenges and achievements of Lu Xun, with the help of Lu Xun's essay "Mr. Fujino" and Osamu Dazai's novel "Sekibetsu" (Regrettable Parting).

Lu Xun stayed in Sendai to study medicine as one of Japan’s first foreign students. The essay "Mr. Fujino," which is written about Lu Xun's favorite teacher, is used as the subject of textbooks in China. In fact, the relationship between Sendai and Lu Xun is well known among Chinese people. Also, Osamu Dazai's "Sekibetsu" is a novel written about Lu Xun’s advisor "Professor Fujino." Lu Xun would eventually quit studying medicine. He would leave Sendai to focus on literature after a certain event during his studies.

On this tour, we will wander around the Tohoku University Katahira Campus which is associated with Lu Xun, using the above mentioned literary works as references and background information. You can learn about Lu Xun's life as an international student from the exhibits in "Tohoku University Archives Lu Xun Memorial Exhibition Room."
