Experience Date Masamune's "Sendai Castle" by time traveling back 400 years to the Edo period with a head-mounted virtual reality display!

The "Sendai Castle VR GO!" is a 360-degree virtual experience using a head-mounted display at various points while walking around the ruins of the main compound of Sendai Castle. Walk around for 20-30 minutes and view a representation of what Date Masamune saw at his castle residence 400 years ago. Tsumenomon, the main gate of the castle, and Onarimon, the gate used to receive the emperor and shogun. The central facility of Sendai Castle, the "Ohiroma” Grand Hall, is a masterpiece of Momoyama architecture. In particular, the gorgeous sliding door paintings inside remind us of Date Masamune's wish to create peace and prosperity for both the country and its people. Another building, the wooden “Kakezukuri”, served as a symbol of Sendai Castle since there was no main castle tower. The Kakezukuri, built on the cliffs on the east side of the main building, is a traditional building symbolizing the Date family. You can experience the spirit of the Date clan by viewing the spectacular view from here through the virtual display and compare it to today’s scenery.

*Note that the VR displays feature display only JAPANESE audio guidance, though everyone can enjoy the historic images. No reservation required. Simply visit the museum reception desk during operating hours.

The opening hours of the museum may be subject to change depending on the situation regarding Covid-19. Please check the official website for details (https://honmarukaikan.com/vrgo/index.html).

Aoba Castle and Honmaru Museum

Aoba Castle and Honmaru Museum

Opened in 1979. Located on the ruins of Sendai Castle (Aoba Castle Ruins) overlooking the city of Sendai, this is a history museum approved by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Exhibits focus on Sendai Castle, city founder and feudal lord Date Masamune, and the Date Clan. A large theater with a 300-inch screen and 152 seats takes visitors on a tour of the castle and the main castle grounds, visiting all the rooms of the "Ohiroma” Great Hall, a fine example of Momoyama architecture, and showing the moving story of Masamune, Katakura Kojuro, Date Narumi, and Princess Iroha. The museum also displays actual materials such as documents written by Date Tanemune (14th head of the Date Clan) and Date Harumune (15th head of the Date clan), letters written by Date Masamune himself (17th head of Date Clan, founder of Sendai City), swords, and wedding furnishings (makeup tools, etc.) from the Uwajima Date Clan (based in Ehime Prefecture). At the museum reception, you can rent a “Sendai Castle VR GO!” device to experience virtual reality of historic images at the actual castle ruins sites.

The main compound of Sendai Castle, the residence of Date Masamune, has stone walls, but no original structures nor restorations. Virtual reality will allow you to view how the castle looked when Sendai was founded!
